| Mathematics equips pupils with a uniquely powerful set of tools to understand and change the world. These tools include logical reasoning, problem-solving and the ability to think in abstract ways.
Mathematics is important in everyday life, many forms of employment , science and technology, the environment and development, and in public decision making. Different cultures have contributed to the development and application of mathematics. Today the subject transcends cultural boundaries and its importance is universally recognised. Mathematics is a creative discipline. It can stimulate moments of pleasure and wonder when a pupil solves a problem for the first time, discovers a more elegant solution to a problem, or sudeenly sees hidden connections. |
"Do not worry about your problems with mathematics, I assure you mine are far greater."
Albert Einstein
. . mathematical knowledge . . . is, in fact, merely verbal knowledge. "3" means "2+1", and "4" means "3+1". Hence it follows (though the proof is long) that "4" means the same as "2+2". Thus mathematical knowledge ceases to be mysterious. Bertrand Russell, History of Western Philosophy, George Allen and Unwin, London, 1961.
