Key Stage 4
KS4
This year we will be changing our method of examining our GCSE mathematics. In previous years we have run a linear form of examination for pupils at KS4, we now feel that a modular from of examination would be more appropriate to our needs and hence are changing over. The accompanying information is here to inform you of details of the move.
The Qualification (GCSE Modular Mathematics):
The qualification each pupil will receive at the end of year 11 will still be a GCSE as previous; the main difference will be in the way this is examined.
How does it affect my son/daughter? Over the two years of KS4 each pupil will sit 3 modular exams; from the three exams the two with the highest grade will count towards 50% of their GCSE. Each pupil will still have to sit a terminal paper TH (higher) or TF (foundation), this accounts for the other 50%.
What about coursework? There is no longer a coursework component to the GCSE this will be examined within the terminal paper by using more in-depth questioning.
How will the overall grade be calculated? Each element of the examination process awards the pupil with UMS marks. It is the total of these marks that gives the overall grade. After the marks are received by the school, class teachers will be able to keep a record of total UMS marks so far and hence be able to monitor student progress much more closely. If a pupil does get below the required mark for the minimum grade on a particular paper there are still UMS marks awarded and they may get a slightly lower grade despite the appearance of a U on their grade sheet
Which tier terminal paper will my child take? The decision regarding the terminal paper tier will be taken in January Y11, based on where each individual student can achieve the highest grade. A grade C is achievable from both tier papers.
